A dynamic facade announces a welcoming home for Rutgers students.
The first of several projects Island has completed for Rutgers University, 330 Cooper created necessary student housing and an admissions center in Camden, New Jersey.
Recognized with a 2012 Philadelphia AIA Merit Award, the 12-story tower contains 80,000 SF of facade enclosing 350 new student beds and providing 7,000 SF of retail and commercial dining space on campus.
For this project, Island deployed a “crane-set” unitized facade chassis, allowing for the factory assembly of large-format punched windows with integrated PTC screens and variable terracotta rainscreen cladding. This megapanel facade strategy joins multiple “architectural” modules together, drastically reducing thermal bridging at panel joinery while increasing performance yield of the continuous outboard insulation.
