A contemporary facade in a historic setting.
Located in downtown Boston’s Post Office Square, the compact site posed challenges for construction. As the surrounding streets were active during the scheduled installation, an adjacent alley provided the only space for delivery of megapanels to a specialized hydraulic crane position.
The Hyatt Centric Hotel is part of a larger redevelopment for the Congress Square site, with materials carefully selected to complement the surrounding street faces and speak to Boston’s historic character. Architect Arrowstreet’s facade design wraps diagonally upward along the structure, dividing the ironspot brick cladding from vision and spandrel glazing with formed aluminum profiles. Island worked in a design-assist capacity to develop a customized “punched-window” glazing system, to be pre-set into the megapanels on the factory floor.
In total, nearly 100 panels were fabricated during the winter months at Island’s New York production facility prior to installation the following spring. Due to the project’s small floor plate and the efficiency of panelized installation, a floor-by-floor installation was completed in just 13 days.
